Full Spectrum Step Maxxing: Get 3x the Health from Every Step You Take
Aug 12, 2026
You wear the ring or watch. You hit your ten thousand steps.
Good. But trackers treat every step the same and every step you take is definitely not the same in terms of health benefits.
Some steps deliver way more health benefit than others. Full Spectrum Step Maxxing is the practice of getting the maximum health return from every step by taking them in the conditions your body responds to best which are real sunlight, fresh air and direct contact with the natural ground.
Sunlight gives you the full spectrum of light wavelengths your body evolved to operate on during the day. Research by Wright and colleagues published in Current Biology in 2013 showed that people living under normal electrical lighting had circadian rhythm disruption. After some time spent under natural light and darkness, their internal clocks realigned with solar time and their circadian rhythm returned to normal.
When you walk indoors, the windows and indoor lights are nowhere near as bright as sunlight outdoors and they also lack or block many of the beneficial wavelengths like UV, red and infrared light.
A 2025 study in Scientific Reports and Nature found these infrared wavelengths pass through tissues and support mitochondrial function. Walking outside gives you better cellular energy than the same steps indoors.
No wonder why so many people today need vitamin d supplements and red light therapy machines!
Trees release phytoncides into the air. Research by Li and colleagues showed these compounds increase natural killer cell activity and anti-cancer proteins. One study found a 3-day forest bathing trip raised Natural Killer cell activity by roughly 50%. The boost lasted more than 30 days. A 2024 systematic review confirmed consistent immune gains from phytoncide exposure, including significant increases in NK cell activation.
Outdoor air usually has lower carbon dioxide than indoor spaces. Elevated indoor CO2 is linked to slower thinking and reduced alertness. Outdoor air also tends to carry fewer volatile compounds and pollutants that build up inside buildings.
Walking barefoot on grass, dirt or wet sand adds the grounding or earthing effect. Electrons flow from the earth into your body. Ghaly and Teplitz showed in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2004 that grounding during sleep normalized cortisol rhythms. People fell asleep faster and reported less pain and stress. Oschman, Chevalier, and Brown reviewed the evidence in the Journal of Inflammation Research in 2015 and linked grounding to reduced inflammation and faster recovery.
This study shows grounding improves mitochondrial function!
Outdoor steps with shoes still get you from sunlight, air and phytoncides. You just miss the grounding effect. However, you can buy special shoes that have metal inserts to ground the shoe as you are step maxxing or buy grounding straps like these on amazon.
When you walk or run indoors, your steps lose most of the above advantages. Artificial lights stay dim and incomplete and unhealthy blue light toxic, flicker heavy spectrum. Carbon dioxide builds up from people breathing and cleaning and using the same enclosed and recycled air. Many indoor spaces also surround you with constant nnEMF signals from internet routers and cellular devices.
So the real ranking for step maxxers looks like this:
- Full Spectrum Step Maxxing. Barefoot on natural grass or dirt or wet sand at the beach under real sunlight in a park or wooded area gets you the best benefit possible when you walk or run. Sunlight sets your circadian rhythm, lowers blood pressure and boosts vitamin D. Near infrared supports your mitochondria. Tree phytoncides boost your immune cells. Lower carbon dioxide supports your alertness. Direct earth contact reduces your inflammation.
- Outdoor steps with shoes on pavement or paths come next. Sunlight, air and tree compounds still provide major health benefits you just miss the anti-inflammatory grounding effects unless you are wearing the special grounded shoes.
- Indoor steps on a treadmill at the gym or around the house are not that great. The light spectrum is blue light toxic and emf heavy. Carbon dioxide often rises. Grounding effect disappears. This could even be considered a step maxxing penalty.
- Indoor steps at night under artificial blue light toxic circadian rhythm disrupting LED lights are the worst. Yeah you are getting your steps in but you are also ruining your circadian rhythm as well as all of the other stuff we mentioned in number three.
The point is that step trackers only count quantity. They have no way to measure light quality, tree phytoncides, carbon dioxide levels, indoor air pollution or electron transfer from the ground.
Your ancestors moved like this every day. Sun overhead. Grounded with some kind of leather shoe or bare feet. Seeing the green and breathing fresh air with a touch of the tree's immune boosting stuff. Modern life effs all of this up.
You have to hack it as much as you can and, if you can, full spectrum step maxxing is an easy way to counter the bad health acceleration that modern living creates.
Start tomorrow. Take twenty or thirty minutes outside in the morning. Shoes off on grass or dirt when you can. Choose a park or area with trees. Let the sunlight hit your eyes without sunglasses. Do this for two weeks. Check your data. Look at your HRV and sleep. I bet you'll see an improvement.
